　　他们是一群生活在边缘地带、见不得光的人，过的是从坟墓里和死尸身上讨生活的日子……所有的一切都是围绕着亚瑟·布莱克(多米尼克·莫纳汉饰)和威利 ·格莱姆斯(拉里·法森顿饰)身上发生过的充满传奇色彩的历险故事展开的，这两个装模作样、笨手笨脚的盗墓者，因为他们所从事的勾当，而被卷入了一系列与死人、活人的纠缠当中，其中不乏滑稽搞笑的意外之喜。

　　18世纪初，本身形同虚设的执法部门总算是逮捕到了这两个又活跃又猖狂的盗墓贼 --亚瑟和威利，在即将走上断头台的前夕，知道自己不免一死的亚瑟遭受到的是行刑前的痛苦与折磨，为了减轻与日俱增的对死亡的恐惧，他将自己的全部信任都委托给了达菲神父(朗·普尔曼饰)，将自己所经历的整整15年的盗墓生涯以及各种奇形怪状的交易买卖的情况全盘托出。亚瑟至今还记得，当时他还只是一个小男孩，因为就快要饿死了，所以想到了专门偷尸体身上值钱的东西用来换钱的好办法“赚外快”。后来，他遇到了经验老道的盗尸者威利，并拜他为师，两人结伴专门猎捕那些因为各种原因不愿意老实待在地下、发生尸变的可怕怪物……威利和亚瑟共同编织的是一个罕见且丰富多彩的历史背景，他们展开了重重冒险，既有惊险的狭路相逢，又有用心险恶的竞争对手的陷害，每当他们尝试着去开启一座坟墓的时候，都要经历一个接受并战胜死亡威胁的过程，最终，他们身上所发生的一切告诉我们--永远都不要相信死尸。
